A new Zogby Strategies national poll of 1,010 likely voters conducted July 28-29 reveals an intense collapse among key cohorts that enabled the President’s battleground state sweep in November. Among voters, the President is underwater 11 points with 43% approving of his job and 54% disapproving. Looking closer at independents, there is a gap of 32 points (31 – 63 approve/disapprove rating).
There is even a notable drop in support from Republican voters – 81-20, compared with last month, where his approval among his base stood at 80-15. While he retains men with a 50-47 rating, 38% of women approve of the President’s overall job performance, and 60% disapprove.
Furthermore, Trump’s handling of his signature issue, immigration and the border, receives less than half (49%) of the electorate’s approval, and just about as many (48%) disapprove. A significant turning of the tide, considering it has been one of his top-performing issues until recently. On tariffs, the President gets 39% approval to 57% disapproval, and on the economy, 42% of voters approve and 55% disapprove.
Perhaps most revealing, 36% of voters say they are proud that Trump is President, vs. 51% who say they’re ashamed. Just last month, 38% of voters told us they were proud, while 48% said they were ashamed. Zeroing in on Republicans, in late June, 76% of GOP voters reported being proud, while today the number stands at 71%.
It is difficult to imagine how the President regains the broad support he had that secured his November 2024 victory and offered him the position to declare a mandate from voters, says Jeremy Zogby, Managing Partner.
