John Zogby Strategies Poll
President Donald Trump’s overall approval rating and his ratings on key issues saw a slight uptick, according to the new John Zogby Strategies poll.
The new poll by Zogby of 1,015 likely voters nationwide was conducted on Wednesday and Thursday (February 25 and 26) and has an overall margin of error of +/-3.2 percentage points. Sampling error margins are higher among sub-groups.
Mr. Trump holds his Republican base at 84% approval and 13% disapproval; his problems among independent voters jumped to 5 points: 36% approval vs. 60% disapproval.
The new poll, launched shortly after the February 24th State of the Union, shows slight rises in Approval for the President’s signature issues, ones he especially highlighted Tuesday evening.
- On handling of immigration: 49% approval, 47% disapproval
- On handling affordability: 43% approval, 51% disapproval
- On handling crime and public safety: 50% approval, 44% disapproval
On each of these issues, the President won Approval among independents: 38% on immigration, 35% on affordability, and 38% on crime.
An issue he barely addressed: warships and warplanes poised for possible intervention in Iran. The likely voters were evenly split, with 45% supporting the President and 46% opposing. Only 34% of independents supported, while 53% opposed.
Pollster Jeremy Zogby: “Though still net negative 3 points on his overall Approval, the President saw a slight bump among voters, both in general and among a few key issues, following his State of the Union speech. In that light, the speech can be considered a victory. However, the nation remains deeply and visibly divided; meanwhile, political issues are brewing both internationally and domestically.
