Zogby Strategies Poll Details New Demographics Behind President‘s Support
Utica, NY – According to a new Zogby Strategies poll of 955 2024 Presidential election voters, Trump maintains an overall 49% – 48% approval/disapproval rating following an action-packed first two weeks in the White House.
Building on our final poll release of the 2024 election, which highlighted Trump’s new broad coalition (notably younger and first-time voters that played a large part in carrying him to victory) – we find today that the under-45 vote buttresses the President’s approval rating.
A majority (52%) of those ages 18-29 approve of President Donald Trump’s first weeks in office vs. 45% who disapprove, and those ages 30-44 (primarily corresponding with the Millennial generation born 1980-1996) rate Trump’s approval at 57% vs. 36% disapproval. In contrast, those over 65 are less upbeat – 40% approve and 58% disapprove.
Another key cohort includes parents with a child under 17 living at home, of whom 62% approve.
Pollster and Managing Partner Jeremy Zogby notes: “The President scores high among parents raising children — a voting bloc that largely corresponds with Millennials who have now entered their 30s and 40s — the same group who helped carry President Obama’s victory in 2008. That amounts to a generational flip since the President’s first term when those older than 65 were a major source of Trump’s support.”
What is driving this significant change? In search of deeper meaning, a demographic question probed survey respondents about which sources of information they mainly trust. The choices included local (TV, online, or newspaper), national network (TV or online), national newspaper (print or online), podcasts, talk radio, or social media.
Zogby continues – “this particular angle is among the most critical findings from the poll because it aligns with a generational shift in the country – voters under 45 are much less trusting of traditional information sources and have gravitated towards 2-3-hour-long free-form podcasts and social media where satirical memes that challenge the national network and print narratives are commonplace. When it comes down to it, this is arguably the real divide”, Zogby added.
Among those who trust national networks and newspapers as their primary source of information – the President’s approval/disapproval ratio is 41% – 57% and 31% – 64%, respectively. Conversely, among those who say podcasts are their number one source of trusted information, Trump’s approval rating is 73%, and those who place trust in social media are 59%. The President still scores high among talk radio enthusiasts (80% approve).
In other findings,
- Independent voters are divided over the President’s first weeks in office (46% approve, 49% disapprove).
- Half (50%) of Hispanics approve of the President vs. 48% disapprove.
- Black voters are also divided – 47% approve, 49% disapprove.
- The gender gap remains significant, with 56% of men giving Trump their approval, compared to 44% of women.
In the final analysis, the President has to-date held his election victory coalition by bypassing the networks and national newspapers and dominating social media and podcasts.
The poll of 955 November 2024 Presidential election voters was fielded February 2 – 3, 2025, and has a +/- 3.2 overall margin of sampling error. Subgroups have higher error margins.
